Major Japanese Companies Make Commitments to Environment

On April 15, 2008, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE) announced the establishment of a new program to allow companies to use its Eco-First logo. The program aims to encourage further environmental efforts by companies,
under which they assure the Minister of Environment of their environmental commitments and are then allowed to use its program logo.

The companies approved under the Eco-First program are required to specify their plans to achieve their environmental conservation goals and act as role models in their respective industries with innovative and unique objectives and initiatives attainable by the top leaders. The companies must also establish a system to monitor the progress of their initiatives and release or report the results to the MOE.
Failing to fulfill their commitments can result in revocation of government approval.

New York's water-toting crowd has a convenient new way to be sustainable while staying hydrated, as a tap water refilling service officially launches in the city.

TapIt is a community program that enables people to refill their water bottles at participating cafés, completely free of charge.

TapIt aims to help people stay healthy and hydrated without relying on single-use plastic bottles. Any restaurant or café with a soda dispenser or tap that gives clean drinking water can sign up as a partner. Thirsty consumers can find taps online or via TapIt's iPhone app, and are provided with information on the type of water that's available, telling discerning customers whether the water's filtered or non-filtered, room temperature or chilled.

TapIt is better for the environment, better for people's wallets, and helps businesses connect with new customers at almost zero cost. The initiative is currently only up and running in New York, where it now has over 100 locations after a year of soft-launching. But it intends to extend its bottle-less initiative further afield. In the meantime, there's no reason why councils or community organisations can't get inspired and help TapIt launch in their own town.

Thank you from Cool Earth

Dear Paul,

We would like to say a huge thank you for supporting Cool Earth through Tropicana and tell you a bit about your amazing achievement, so far.

Last year you helped to protect over 93 million sq ft of rainforest. That's 450,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions you stopped from being released into the atmosphere. You've also protected thousands of species of plant, insect and animal and helped local indigenous communities live sustainably. This area of rainforest was at great risk of being deforested but you have kept it standing, thank you.

Have a look at how your contribution has helped and meet the rainforest community who partner with Cool Earth.

Please continue to support us and sign up to Tropicana's Juicy Rewards scheme and rescue even more rainforest in 2010. Already this year you've protected 330,000 sq ft of rainforest and we hope you'll do a lot more. We couldn't have done any of this without your efforts so thank you from me and the Cool Earth team.

Support us with a tree

You can also support us by sponsoring a unique hardwood treefor yourself or a loved one. You'll receive a certificate with fantastic facts about your chosen tree and be able to see its location on Google Maps.

Which ever way you decide to support us, you will be taking action and protecting pristine rainforest.

Cool Earth: keeping carbon where it belongs.

Best wishes

While one part of the island is going green with marine ventures, the other side will sport artificial hills that will look as natural as any. This half of the island is to encourage activities like trekking and cave exploration.
The project will give the visitors a recreational center. Marine Exploration Center that is involved with off-shore “programmed structures” incorporating a coastal plant greenhouse, marine life tank, vertical reef, and two restaurants. Add to it the unreal floating structures that will emerge like giant bubbles on the waves and a restaurant on an artificial island that will look at Lady Liberty and this will be an exhilarating trip for both the young and the old.

People of New York
are monitoring their environment

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) — People in New York can now monitor the city’s environmental conditions and certain health conditions via their computers, officials said.

The city health department’s new Environmental Public Health Tracking Portal — at http://nyc.gov/health/tracking — provides continually updated information on everything from air quality and housing quality to pest levels and pesticide use.

“Until now, it has been hard to compare environmental health conditions across the city’s many neighborhoods,” Daniel Kass, the city health department’s acting deputy commissioner for environmental health, said in a statement.

“Now anyone can track issues of concern — for a neighborhood, a borough or the whole of New York City.”

The portal offers various ways to explore environmental health data. For example, users can see pesticide use by neighborhood, or view how closely related childhood asthma hospitalizations are with exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke in the home, Kass said.

The portal can also highlight citywide trends, such as the number of days on which air-quality advisories have been issued for general or special populations.
